Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) started its Kidney Transplant Program in 2004. To date, a total of 106 kidney transplant procedures have been performed in SPMC, involving 28/106 (26.42%) female and 78/106 (73.58%) male kidney recipients. The average age of the recipients was 42 years old (range: 17 to 72). From 2004 to 2012, an average of five kidney transplants were performed in SPMC per year. In 2012, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) listed “End Stage Renal Disease Eligible for Kidney Transplant” as one of the conditions covered by the Case Type Z Benefit Package and included SPMC among the first contracted hospitals to provide kidney transplant services under the package.
